The Chairman said, that the Committee were quite ready to believe the application for an adjournment had been made in good faith; but the negotiations, for the purpose of which it was made, having failed, it was unnecessary to delay the proceedings of the Committee further. Mr. Alexander Johns was called in; and re-examined by Mr. Joy, as follows: 4997. YOU were cross-examined at some length on the subject of the sittings jjr of the arbitration being held in London, and not in Belfast. Will you tell the Committee, as shortly as possible, whether Mr. Rea on frequent occasions during the progress of the inquiry before the arbitrators did not assent to the sittings being in London, and say that he had witnesses in London?--Yes, repeatedly. Mr. Rea said, on behalf of Mr. Smith, that he objected to the question, on the ground that the matter referred to must be in writing. The Chairman said that he hoped Mr. Rea would not compel the Committee to adopt measures which, if he continued such interruptions, they would feel bound to resort to. Mr. Rea said that he would obey the Chairman's order at once. 4998. Mr. Joy. Can you conveniently, without delay, give the dates of the occasions on which Mr. Rea did so assent?--Yes. 4990. Then, be good enough to give the dates briefly?--The most remarkable and pointed assents were on the 14th January 1861, on the 23d October 1861, on the 1st November 1861 (I think four or five times on that day), and on the 16th December 1861.
